Two cats have died and three children were rescued after a huge East London flat fire. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to Stepney Causeway, Wapping early this morning shortly before 4am (7 March 2025) to tackle the blaze on the first floor of a seven-story tower block.

Upon arrival they were met by three people who fled the scene, who subsequently received medical attention from the London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation. As crews tackled the blaze, they rescued one person and three children from a neighbouring flat using a nine-metre ladder.

As crews tackled the fire, which was thought to be accidentally caused by the plug to a chest freezer malfunctioning, the Brigade used their nine-metre ladder to rescue three children and one adult from a neighbouring apartment.

Later on, two cats were found in the flat, part of which has been severely damaged by the blaze. The fire is thought to be accidentally caused by the plug to a chest freezer malfunctioning.

A spokesperson the London Fire Brigade said: “Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Stepney Causeway in Wapping.

"Part of a five room flat on the first floor of a seven storey block of flats was destroyed by fire. Three people left the flat before the Brigade arrived. They were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

"Two cats were found in the flat who had sadly died. One person and three children were rescued from a neighbouring flat by crews using a nine metre later, thankfully no injuries are reported.

"The Brigade's 999 Control officers were first called at 0351 and deployed crews from Shadwell, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green and Millwall fire stations. The cause of the fire is accidental and due to an electrical event in a plug for a chest freezer. "
