The London Underground station where you're most likely to fall through the gap

1 month ago 16

Nearly 250 people fell into the gap between Tube trains and the platform last year, with one station coming out on top for the most accidents recorded. The incidents occurred across 71 stations on the transport network between April 2023 and April 2024.

The data was revealed by Transport for London (TfL) last week in the response to a Freedom of Information (FoI) request. It stated that there were 247 occasions when passengers were reported as falling into the gap between the Tube and platform over the 2023/24 financial year.

The top offender was Baker Street station, with 80 customers falling in the gap. This was followed by Waterloo, with 13 falls and Victoria, which saw 11 passengers falling.

The information also recorded 16 incidents of passengers falling into the gap between the train and platform at London Overground stations between April 2023 and April 2024. The top spots were occupied by Willesden Junction, Gospel Oak and Wapping, which each saw two incidents across the year.

The FoI case officer said: "The safety of our staff and customers is our top priority and the London Underground is recognised as one of the safest metros around the world. Despite this, we are never complacent, and continuously strive to reduce injuries and ensure our customers travel safely across the network."

They added: "We have done a lot to understand the key locations, issues and contributory factors which lead to customer accidents, particularly as customers board and alight our trains. To reduce numbers of safety incidents, we focus on both influencing customer behaviour and changing our infrastructure where possible to reduce the risk."
