Sarah Beeny’s funny reason for ‘burying a cottage pie in the garden’

1 month ago 17

Property expert and TV presenter Sarah Beeny had a bit of an unusual incident with a cottage pie that led her to bury it in her back garden. The 53-year-old celeb, who is brushing up her baking skills for Channel 4’s 'The Great Celebrity Bake Off For Stand Up To Cancer', spoke about her numerous cooking fiascos, highlighting one particularly smelly culinary catastrophe.

According to New magazine, she recalled: "I once cooked a cottage pie and didn't have enough space to keep it in the fridge, and it went off, and it smelled so bad I had to dig a hole in the garden to bury it."

Sarah, who was given the all-clear from breast cancer in 2023, confessed her baking abilities are limited and desserts aren’t exactly her go-to snack. She's joining 19 other baking hopefuls aiming to whip up some dough for the joint charity effort by Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK"

The 53-year-old admitted she prefers starters to desserts

Sarah said: "I've never really baked. I think I'm a bit too impatient. I don't actually like cake much. Can I say that? They're really low on my priority list."

The down-to-earth star explained: "I guess you're a pudding or a cheese person, and I'm a cheese person. Starter or pudding? Starter. Give me smoked salmon rather than dessert. That's got bang for bucks!"

In the famed tent, Sarah will be standing shoulder to shoulder with ‘ Good Morning Britain ’ anchor Kate Garraway among others, as they strive to wow judges Paul Hollywood and Caroline Waldegrave, the latter stepping in for Dame Prue Leith this series.

Much like Sarah, 57-year-old Caroline has had her fair share of culinary disasters. She recalled: "A few years back, I was cooking for my entire family for Christmas Day, and it was the first time I'd done Christmas lunch for the family. I put the turkey in, and after a while, I thought, 'I really can't smell much'. The oven had broken."

In a desperate bid to save the day, she had to knock on her neighbours' door to borrow their oven, but they were already roasting their own turkey. She recalled: "So, it ended up being a Christmas lunch at supper time, and for lunch, we had cheese and biscuits. By the time we ate, they were hungry and slightly drunk, which, arguably, is the best state to be in if you are eating a meal I've cooked."

'The Great Celebrity Bake Off For Stand Up To Cancer', kicks off on Sunday, March 16, at 7.40pm on Channel 4.
