Rob Brydon is set to delight country music fans with a brand new travel series on the BBC, showcasing his genuine passion for the genre. The 'Gavin and Stacey' star, familiar for his rendition of 'Islands In the Stream' alongside Nessa (played by Ruth Jones) in the beloved sitcom, will headline a three-part series that promises to delve into the depths of country music.
On his upcoming venture, Rob shared, "I've always loved country music but never really delved too deeply into it. The current resurgence means it's the perfect time to head over to Nashville and find out more."
The comedian is enthusiastic about immersing himself into the rich tapestry of the country scene. Slated to hit the screens on BBC Two this September, 'Rob Brydon's Honky Tonk Road Trip' will follow the 'Would I Lie To You?' presenter as he journeys through the southern states of America. The show will see him exploring the roots of country music and its burgeoning global popularity.
His adventure begins in Nashville, honouring the centennial of the Grand Ole Opry, before venturing to Kentucky and Bristol, Tennessee. There, he'll encounter Carlene Carter, granddaughter of the legendary 'Mother' Maybelle Carter.
Dolly Parton's niece Heidi will greet him at Dollywood, and his journey will include a stint in Alabama before coming full circle to Nashville.
In other news, despite the buzz from last year's Christmas special, Rob has stood firm on the stance that 'Gavin and Stacey' had reached its conclusion. Speaking in December before the finale aired, he was quizzed about the possibility of more specials.
On The Times' 'Off Air... with Jane and Fi' podcast, he confirmed: "It's done. It's finished." Reflecting on its enduring popularity, Rob praised writers James Corden and Ruth Jones - who also play Smithy and Nessa respectively - for the show's success.
He said: "It's the writing. That's the first thing, the script, that's the beginning of everything. You could have the best actors in the world and if the script isn't up to much, they'll add to it but it won't be enough."
