Martin Lewis urges workers to spend £4.99 to gain big discounts

4 weeks ago 16

The Blue Light Card scheme has provided NHS and emergency services workers a range of discounts since 2008, but you might not be aware that a new group of workers have been added to the scheme. In August 2024, the Blue Light Card became available to teachers and support staff working across the education sector. For £4.99, the card provides two year's access to a variety of discounts across food, retail and entertainment.

Martin Lewis recommended purchasing the card if you're an avid foodie or retail shopper, as you could save a considerable amount over the two year period. A Blue Light Card offers over 15,000 high street and online discounts from large retailers and local businesses, covering fashion, days out, restaurants, holidays and more.

You can even add a free Blue Light Card Chrome extension to your internet browser to automatically check if the online store you're browsing offers a Blue Light Card discount. The scheme is available to teaching and supporting staff working in any of the following:

  • Early years & primary schools

  • Secondary schools & sixth form colleges

  • Special schools, referral units, and centrally employed

You'll need your education establishment email address, work ID, or a recent payslip to prove you're eligible for membership.

Alongside teaching staff, employees for the NHS, police, emergency services, armed forces staff and social care workers are also eligible. Some of the biggest discounts available with a Blue Light Card include 10% off booking.com and jet2holidays, alongside 20% national express. Other brands offering Blue Light Card discounts include Nike, Apple, JD sports, Starbucks, Asda and Samsung.

You can check for any restaurant or retailer by checking through the Blue Light Card app or asking a shop assistant in-store.
