Drivers warned of MOT ‘mistake’ which could cost thousands down the line

1 month ago 24

Many drivers breathe a sigh of relief when they hear their car has passed its MOT, believing they've dodged the bullet of costly urgent repairs. However, mechanics often add a list of advisories that owners, especially those with older cars, need to be aware of.

These advisories are frequently overlooked, with drivers hesitant to shell out for various repairs. After all, if the car has passed an MOT, how serious can these issues be?

But experts advise getting these advisories sorted ASAP as they're problems that need attention and will likely worsen over time.

A successful MOT isn't a reason to put off car maintenance

Ignoring them increases the chances of failing the next MOT and could lead to higher costs if larger repairs are needed than initially anticipated. It's particularly young to middle-aged drivers who tend to ignore advisories, possibly due to concerns about repair costs.

Research by car.co.uk revealed that 69 per cent of Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) delay acting on MOT advisory notes, risking more expensive repairs. Half of this age group also postpone having their cars serviced, with costs likely being the main deterrent, reports Birmingham Live.

A spokesperson for the motoring firm highlighted the worrying maintenance habits among younger drivers.

The spokesperson said: "69 per cent of Millennials do not act on advisory notes given after an MOT immediately, potentially leading to costlier repairs in the future. Furthermore, 50 per cent of Millennial drivers only service their cars every few years, rather than following regular maintenance schedules."
