A rare Beatrix Potter 50p coin has skyrocketed in value, with a listing for £25,000 on eBay - more than 50,000 times its original worth. The sought-after collectable, featuring the image of Benjamin Bunny from the cherished stories by Beatrix Potter, has been put up for sale by a Morpeth-based seller for a whopping £25,086.72 – or they're open to the best offer.
On eBay, the seller described the coin as: "This rare piece celebrates the beloved character from Potter's enchanting tales, and is a splendid addition to any collection of British decimal coinage."
They added: "It's a must-have for enthusiasts of Potter's work and a timeless piece of numismatic artistry. Struck in 2017, the coin features the charming depiction of Benjamin Bunny, showcasing the exquisite detail and craftsmanship that the Royal Mint is renowned for."
While a 2017 Benjamin Bunny coin can be found listed at just £8 on the Royal Mint's own website, this particular coin has clearly captured the hearts and wallets of collectors, reports the Express.
The special edition coin was crafted by Emma Noble in honour of the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter, depicting the cheeky Benjamin Bunny donning a hat pinched from Mr. McGregor's scarecrow in the story.
Issued during the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2017, the other side of the coin bears the regal portrait of Her Majesty, designed by Jody Clark. The Beatrix Potter series also includes coins with designs of Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggy Winkle, Flopsy Bunny, and Jemima Puddle-Duck, among others.
The priciest coin ever thought to be sold is the 794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, which fetched a staggering $12 million at an auction in 2022.
