Staying fit and healthy is so important, but it does come at a price - time and money. But the investment is well worth it and can add years onto your life, making you feel energised and more confident. It also comes with a massive improvement to one's mental health, as well as the obvious physical ones.

Gyms in the city are usually busy and can be a great social opportunity, with fitness classes being a great place to meet people.

But which is the best value? With so many options to choose from, we've whittled it down to some of the cheapest and best-value ones we could find.

PureGym

There are over 60 PureGyms in London alone

PureGym is one of the most popular gym brands in the UK. It has hundreds of gyms across the country, over 60 of which are in London. For fitness enthusiasts, PureGym offers three options.

The first and cheapest is the Off-Peak membership at £17.99 a month. At this great price, you can use PureGym facilities at one of their sites during off-peak times. Generally, peak times are between 3.30pm and 8.30pm on weekdays, but this varies between gyms. You are also allowed to book classes eight days in advance.

The next cheapest is the Core membership, which is £22.99 a month. This permits you 24/7 unrestricted access to one gym of your choice and you too can book classes eight days in advance.

The most expensive membership is the Plus membership. This is £28.99. With this subscription, you can access every other PureGym at the same price or lower than yours. You can book classes 14 days in advance to make sure you get a place, bring a guest with you four times a month, and you can freeze your membership for up to three months to cover if you get an injury or cannot go to the gym for whatever reason. Finally, you even get unlimited access to their special vitamin-packed sports water drink in several fruity flavours.

The Gym Group

The cheapest full-access membership at The Gym Group is the standard saver membership. You can get up to one month free as part of a nine or 12-month pay upfront contract starting at £169. This is equivalent to £18.77 per month, and you get 24/7 access to one gym and unlimited free classes.

The next cheapest full-access membership at The Gym Group is the student membership. Prices start at £119 for six, eight and 12-month memberships, equivalent to just £19.83 per month. This affords 24/7 access and free classes.

The ultimate saver membership gets you up to one month free, available as a nine or 12-month pay upfront option. From £219, equivalent to just £24.33 per month you can get access to multiple gyms all over the UK. You can also bring guests.

Offered in selected gyms from £14.99, the off-peak membership allows members to join at a lower membership fee and access the gym at restricted times of the day.

The standard membership starts at £19.99 for one gym for 24/7 access. The ultimate membership starts at £25.99, and you can get access to multiple gyms across the UK. you can also bring a guest each month.

The prices are all subject to change based on your area, so London is likely to be a bit more expensive.

Nuffield Health

Nuffield is certainly on the more expensive side

Nuffield is certainly on the more expensive side in terms of gym memberships but you do get a whole lot more with the extra money. Many of their facilities have pools, saunas and steam rooms to unwind in after a hefty workout.

Their pricing varies based on location and membership type, for example for the Nuffield Health Covent Garden Fitness & Wellbeing Gym, gym membership service Hussle offers access starting from £14.99 per visit, with a Monthly+ Pass priced at £113.85 per month.

For Nuffield Health Bloomsbury Fitness & Wellbeing Gym, access starts from £19.99 per visit, with a Monthly+ Pass at £116.15 per month.

Other gyms at a similar price point include GymBox, which has several different membership options, or on the more expensive side, Third Space.

Better

Back to cheaper avenues, Better offers great deals on monthly subscriptions. Their memberships can be as low as just £5 a month like on the Better Flex Adult Concessionary and the Better Flex Junior plans, though you need to be on certain benefits to be eligible for the former and be below 18 for the latter.

The Better Flex Adult is not much more at £10 a month. For each of these memberships you can book one free activity a month - this could be a gym session, a dip in the pool or a fitness class.

More expensive memberships mean you have access to more of the facilities available. The Better Health Centre is £54 a month but you have access to Gym, Swimming, Fitness Classes, and the Health Suite. The off peak version of this, the Better Health Centre Saver (Off Peak), is £40 a month and you can only visit Monday - Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday after 1pm.

These prices were all based on the Better facility at Vauxhall Leisure Centre and may vary depending on the site.
