A look at the 'declining' town that could soon become part of London

Plans from Slough Borough Council could see the Berkshire town joining the capital in the future. The scheme would be done in response to the Government's Devolution White Paper, which seeks to encourage local governments to form larger unitary authorities, entrusting more power to local leaders instead of Westminster.

The council's cabinet nodded through the proposition last month, which also put forward options to join Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Swindon. The proposal could see the area ultimately merging with a West London council or joining the Greater London Authority.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan told MyLondon last week that he was not surprised Slough Borough Council wanted to 'join the party'. Despite this, the Mayor confirmed he had not yet spoken to the authority on the topic.

MyLondon visited Slough town centre to speak to local businesses and residents about the possibility of joining the capital. Many cited difficulties they had encountered from a lack of trade in the local high street, saying they would hope to see more investment in the area if a merge with London was on the cards.
